units of marines fan out to these countries, fbi agents are being sent to libya to investigate the murder of the american ambassador there and degr three other americans were killed. the fbi. we think of the fbi as a domestic agency, it's the fbi that's part of the u.s. government that has the authority to investigate deaths of americans in all other parts of the world. fbi did it in the embassy bombings in kenya, in tanzania in 1998, and the "uss cole" bombing in 2000 and mumbai bombings in india in 2008 and now the fbi is investigating in libya or at least we're told they are on their way. the fbi being dispatched to libya is yet another reminder what happened in libya appears to be a different kettle of fish than what is happening at all the other embassies and u.s. sites around the world today. the attack that killed the u.s. ambassador appears to be a coordinated military assault by well-armed men who arrived at the scene quite separately from any civilian protest. given the militant groups known to operate in the area of benghazi and the types of attacks for which those g

attack. >> a hacker group claims it stole personal information aboutapple device owners from an fbi laptop. fox 5's melanie alnwick has more. >> reporter: good morning. it is not clear yet whether the exposure of that information could be personally damaging to apple customers. apple itself has not commented yet on the breach of information. the responsible group, which calls itself anti-sec as in anti-security, says it released the information published it basically to let the public know what kind of information the fbi is collecting. every apple device has a unique identification number which lets itunes and app developers know which device is running which app. for example, the id could allow game developers to keep track of users' high scores. the hacker group anti-sec says it actually found 12 million apple ids on an fbi agent's laptop. anti-sec says the data file had user names, zip codes, cell phone numbers and addresses but chose just to post the device name and number. the group says the fbi is using apple device information for a tracking people project in its own words.

security. behind the scenes, an f.b.i. team is preparing to fly to benghazi to investigate the attack. the compound behind these walls is the major crime scene, but any evidence left inside will have been badly contaminated by the looters and the curious local people who flooded in after the attack. here's what eyewitnesses, officials and libyan commanders in charge that night have told us. sometime around 9:30 p.m., about 70 armed men attacked the consulate's main gates with guns and heavy weapons. they then stormed in, overwhelming local and american security. with all four buildings on fire, the libyan government ordered a local militia to the rescue. that militia helped to ferry 31 americans and the body of sean smith out the back gate in armored cars to a house a mile away rented by the u.s. government. shortly afterwards, it, too, came under fierce attack. what we still don't know is how, back at the compound, ambassador stevens got separated from his security detail only to be found dead or dying just after midnight by the crowd. suspicion for the attack is focused on a powerfu

have any information as to whether or not the fbi is on the ground in benghazi, libya, going through the consulate or not? >> it is not clear they're on the ground today, i don't know the answer to that. i can tell you a week after the incident they were not on the ground in benghazi. they were in neighboring tripoli. they were not where the crime scene was. that is deeply troubling fact. how can they not investigate the incident if they're not occurring the crime scene. that usually has to occur right after the event. i would hope they're there now. bill: what does that suggest if they are not? >> i don't know how you can do a full investigation if you can't be there to secure evidence at the scene and to be right where the event occurred to ask questions. my background as a prosecutor and i can tell you the first thing that you need to do is right at the beginning of the event you have to get the accounts, you've got to make sure the evidence is secure. the fact they haven't been there is deeply troubling. bill: could it be it is still not safe? >> well it could be that that sugges

in situation. both pittsburgh and fbi s.w.a.t. teams are on the scene of a hostage situation taking place on the 16th floor of a downtown highway. the cw brightsman company we understand is the setting for all of this. an ex-military man we're told walked into that office this morning where apparently he used to work. asked for one individual in particular and has now taken hostages. it is not absolutely clear that the one person that he named is the person who is being held hostage. there might be as many as two hostages. we're told no shots have been fired. unknown weaponry involved and police say they have a visual wall on the suspect the they know who he is. they have brought his mother to the building to help deal with negotiations but so far the hostage situation continues in downtown pittsburgh on the 16th floor of a high-rise. no shots fired so far. we'll keep you updated as the hour rolls along. >> we will. brand new stories and more breaking news. jon: good to see you, arthel the white house is it calling the assault in lib libya a terrorist attack. what is the political fallout
